1.) They claim to produce instant results
If the diet or product you are thinking about trying suggests that immediate results will be obtained, then it is probably a 'fad'. These scams tend to play on your emotions by dangling the 'get skinny tomorrow' carrot in front of you. Don't fall for it. True and lasting weight loss is achieved by determination and persistence.
2.) They aren't FDA approved
If the diet, pill, bar, drink etc is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, then you should probably steer clear. However, an exception to this is herbal supplements. Herbal supplements can skate by the FDA regulations, however be sure to do your research before trying them.
3.) They are expensive
Losing weight doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg. It should be something you can stick to for life, and we all know that spending extensive amounts of money will not last long. A true, healthy lifestyle is constructed within your budget and allows you to stick to it for a lengthy amount of time. If you are purchasing diet pills, specialty food items, and supplements to increase weight loss; please be sure you aren't paying too much for something you could be doing without the help of said products.
4.) They aren't backed by a medical professional
If the diet trend you have your heart set on trying isn't backed by a licensed medical professional (M.D., R.D., etc) then you may need to do some more research. Typically, a good nutrition or weight loss program will be backed by someone who has the license or certification to administer and monitor you while on it.
5.) They aren't proven by research and studies
Any legitimate diet plan or product will have numerous studies to show regarding it's efficacy. If not, you might be getting scammed, or worse, putting yourself at risk. Dig deeper and make sure that there have been extensive research studies done on what you are about to try.
Typically these 5 tips can help you spot a 'fad diet'. Beware that these diets and products sometimes disguise themselves very well and can be extremely tempting. Do your research, make educated decisions and consult a Registered Dietitian for weight loss and nutrition questions. Your body is worth the time and money it takes to do things the right way Have patience, weight loss is a process.
